Accident with a rental car in Morocco: the step-by-step procedure

Even a minor accident during your car rental in Morocco requires following a precise procedure within 72 hours. This guide reflects the official procedure in the FB Rent contract and Moroccan regulations, so you protect your deposit and avoid being held liable beyond what's necessary.

· Mis à jour le

Step 1 — Secure the scene and call emergency services if needed

Personal safety comes before everything else. The moment the accident happens: - Turn on the hazard lights - Get out of the vehicle and put on your high-visibility vest - Place the warning triangle 50 m away in town, 150 m on highway - Check for any injured persons If anyone is hurt or traffic becomes dangerous, immediately call: - 15 — Civil Protection (medical emergencies) - 19 — Police (in town) - 177 — Royal Gendarmerie (on roads outside towns) Do not move the vehicle until law enforcement has investigated the scene, unless it is dangerously blocking traffic.

Step 2 — Call FB Rent immediately

Once the scene is safe, your first call should be to our 24/7 assistance: +212 6 51 72 08 10. Our team: - Walks you through the accident report live - Tells you whether the police needs to be called - Tells you what to photograph and document - Coordinates with insurance and opens your file - Arranges a replacement vehicle if needed The earlier you call, the faster your file is processed and your deposit released.

Step 3 — Fill in the accident report

The accident report (constat amiable) is the central document that opens your insurance file. It is bilingual Arabic / French in Morocco — fill it in either language. You'll find a copy in the glove compartment of your FB Rent vehicle. Fill it in with the other driver, in two copies, and both sign. Make sure to include: - Date, time, exact location (road, kilometer, city) - Identity and license number of the drivers - License plates of both vehicles - Insurance companies of both parties - Clear diagram of the accident - Witnesses if any (name, phone) Always photograph the vehicles, plates, damages, surroundings, road signs and markings. Photos are irrefutable; reports can be challenged.

Step 4 — When the police are mandatory

The accident report is enough in most cases. But the intervention of the police or gendarmerie is mandatory if: - Anyone is injured, even slightly - The other driver refuses to sign the report - The other driver appears intoxicated - The accident involves a pedestrian, animal, or uninsured vehicle - The other vehicle has foreign plates In those cases, request the official report (PV). It will be needed for the insurance file.

Step 5 — The 72-hour deadline

This is the most critical contractual point. Per article 4 of our terms, the report must reach us within 72 hours of the accident. Past that, the report is considered invalid and you are held liable for the accident. To meet this deadline without stress: - Photograph the signed report and send it to us via WhatsApp or email within hours - Bring the original at vehicle return - Keep a copy for yourself

Step 6 — How the deductible works

Your car has comprehensive insurance. The security deposit blocked at vehicle pickup acts as the deductible cap — meaning the maximum you can be charged. Per our terms: - At-fault accident: the deductible is 20% of the vehicle's value, already covered by your security deposit. You can never be charged beyond it. - Not-at-fault accident: your deposit is fully released within 10 days of file closure. - Alcohol-related accident: deductible jumps to 100% of the vehicle's value. Insurance does not cover, you are financially responsible for the full damages. Key rule: driving without being named on the contract, with an invalid license, or in serious violation (gross speeding, intoxication) voids the coverage.

Step 7 — Documents to keep

Keep and photograph for safety: - The signed accident report (both copies) - The police or gendarmerie official report if applicable - Your photos of the accident - Witness contact details - Medical certificates if injured The original report must be handed to our team at vehicle return. A copy stays with you.

Frequently asked questions

What if the other driver has no insurance or refuses the report?

Always call the police or gendarmerie to issue an official report. In Morocco, the Traffic Accident Guarantee Fund can compensate victims of uninsured drivers under certain conditions. In all cases, contact FB Rent quickly to open the file.

Should the accident report be in Arabic or French?

The bilingual Arabic / French form is used everywhere in Morocco. You can fill it in either language, or a mix of both. What matters is that it's complete, signed by both parties and photographed.

For very minor damage (scratch, bumper rub), is a report still needed?

Yes, always. Even minor damage must be reported within 72 hours with an accident report. Otherwise insurance does not apply and the deductible is fully retained from your deposit.

How long to recover my deposit after an accident?

Once the insurance file is closed (typically 4 to 6 weeks), the unused part of your deposit is returned. If you are found not at fault, the deposit is fully released.

What happens if alcohol is involved?

Per our terms, the deductible jumps to 100% of the vehicle's value. Insurance does not cover alcohol-related accidents, and you are responsible for all damages.

Am I covered if I drive outside Morocco?

No. Our vehicles cannot cross Moroccan borders. Any exit from the territory is excluded from the insurance and constitutes a breach of the rental contract.
