Required documents to rent a car in Morocco

To rent with FB Rent, three documents are required at pickup. This guide details each one, the equivalences for foreign drivers, and the pitfalls to avoid so your rental isn't cancelled at the last minute.

· Mis à jour le

1. Driver's license

Three types of driving license are accepted in Morocco: - Moroccan national license, valid - Foreign national license in a Latin-alphabet language (French, Spanish, English, Italian, German, Dutch, Portuguese) - International driving permit for licenses in non-Latin alphabets (Chinese, Russian, non-Moroccan Arabic, etc.) FB Rent criteria: - License valid on the date of vehicle pickup - Held for at least 1 year - Driver aged 18 or older (per article 4 of our terms) An expired, suspended or under-renewal license is not accepted. Without alternative, the contract cannot be concluded and the price paid is not refundable.

2. Identity document

A valid identity document is mandatory: - For Moroccan residents: a valid CIN (national ID card) - For foreigners: a valid passport The document must be the original (no photocopy or photo). Its validity must cover at least the entire rental period.

3. Bank card in the renter's name

A bank card in the main renter's name is required for the security deposit (pre-authorization): - Visa or Mastercard, debit or credit - Physically present at pickup (no remote payment) - Valid through rental period + 30 days minimum (for pre-authorization release) Cash alternative: if you don't have a bank card or it's not in your name, the deposit can be paid in cash (MAD only) directly at the agency.

International driving permit: when is it required?

The international driving permit is not always required in Morocco. It depends on your national license alphabet: - Not needed if your license is in French, Spanish, English, Italian, German, Dutch or Portuguese - Required if your license is in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Hebrew, non-Moroccan Arabic or any other non-Latin alphabet The IDP is requested in your home country before departure (not issued in Morocco). It accompanies your national license, doesn't replace it. Valid for 3 years. When in doubt, get it: it's free or very inexpensive and avoids any misunderstanding at pickup.

Additional driver

You can add one or more additional drivers for free, provided each one: - Is named on the rental contract - Shows a valid license held for at least 1 year - Shows a valid ID Important: any non-named driver who takes the wheel makes the main renter fully liable in case of accident — insurance does not cover. Always declare every potential driver at pickup.

Special cases

  • Foreign students residing in Morocco: passport + license (national or international based on alphabet) + residence card if possible
  • Couples with one license: only the license holder can drive; add the partner as additional driver if they also have a license
  • Business travel (corporate booking): the contract is in the name of the individual driving, not the company. The company may pay the invoice, but license and card must be in the driver's name

Pre-departure checklist

Before flying to Morocco, check: - Valid driver's license, held for at least 1 year - International driving permit if required (depending on alphabet) - Valid passport (foreign) or CIN (Moroccan) - Bank card in your name, valid for at least 30 days after rental end - FB Rent number saved: +212 6 51 72 08 10 - Flight number provided to us for live tracking In doubt? Frequently asked questions

My license is less than 1 year old, can I still rent?

No. The 1-year minimum is firm and stated in our terms (article 4). It's also a requirement from our insurance company. Without alternative, the booking is non-refundable.

My license expires in 2 months. Can I rent for a week?

Yes, provided the license is valid throughout the entire rental and at pickup. Expiration after return is not an issue.

Can I rent with a certified photocopy of my license?

No. The original license is mandatory. A photocopy, even certified, is not accepted by our insurance.

Can my husband's bank card be used for my rental?

No. The security deposit must be blocked on a card in the main renter's name. If the card is in another name, the contract cannot be concluded. Solution: pay the deposit in cash, or book the rental in the name of the person whose card will be used.

I don't have an international driving permit, is my French license enough?

Yes. The French license is in Latin alphabet, valid in Morocco without IDP. Same for Spanish, English, Italian, German, Dutch and Portuguese licenses.

What's the minimum age to rent at FB Rent?

18 (per article 4 of our terms). No surcharge or category restriction for young drivers, provided the license has been held for 1 year minimum.
